The teacher is not teaching anymore, they are just surviving. Like a Saturday morning minibus to Cape Town but nobody knows where they are going and the driver is also lost. And listen, Helderberg is beautiful, we not going to lie. The mountain, the views, the whole thing. But 859 kids on a no-fee budget means somewhere a photocopier is running on prayer and the tuck shop is basically holding the whole school economy together. That tuck shop lady is probably the most important person on the premises. The principal can go home, but if Aunty closes the hatch, this whole operation shuts down. But here is the thing, no fees means no barrier. Any kid from Lwandle can walk through that gate and get an education without their parents stressing about a debit order bouncing. In a country where some schools charge more than a monthly salary just for "administration fees," that actually means something. These kids and these 21 absolutely exhausted teachers are out here doing the real work. Overall verdict: Understaffed, overcrowded, and running on vibes and vetkoek, but somehow producing the kind of tough, resourceful people that Constantia schools could never.
