Blue Downs High. The Cape Flats. Co-ed. Public. That's it. That's all we have. No fees to laugh at, no fancy motto to quote back at you, no student-teacher ratio to do maths on. Just a school, some learners, and the Cape Flats wind hitting you in the face every single morning on the way to first period. But listen, Blue Downs itself does the roasting for us. You are sitting in class trying to focus on trigonometry and somewhere outside there is a taxi hooting, a dog barking, and a guy selling vetkoek. That is not a distraction, that is just Tuesday. The school is co-ed which means the drama never stops, someone is always in their feelings by break time, and the tuck shop queue is basically a social battlefield. Public school in Cape Town means you are at the mercy of the WCED, load shedding killed your exams twice, and the textbooks are from 2009 but the teacher is doing her best, she really is. Blue Downs High is not trying to impress you with Latin mottos or astroturfed rugby fields. It is just getting on with it, which honestly, in this economy, is more than most can say. Overall verdict: Not the school on the mountain, but it built people who know how to handle real life, and that is worth something.
