Fraaisig Primary School in Knysna, hey. "Fraaisig" means beautiful view, which is genuinely a gorgeous name for a school, but bru, with 1295 kids and only 42 teachers, the only view those educators are getting is the back of 30 kids' heads while they slowly lose the will to live. Thirty point eight learners per teacher. That is not a classroom, that is a taxi rank with a whiteboard. Forty-two teachers for nearly thirteen hundred children. You know what else has those kinds of numbers, a music festival. At least at a festival the adults chose to be there. These teachers rocked up thinking they were going to shape young minds and instead they are doing crowd control in Knysna while one kid in the back is eating his eraser and another one has not been seen since Wednesday. The WCED said "here are your resources" and handed them a box of chalk and a prayer. To be fair though, it is a no-fee school, so not a single cent comes out of any parent's pocket, and in this economy that is genuinely something to respect. The government is footing the bill for over a thousand kids in Knysna to get an education, and that actually matters. The teachers there are real ones for showing up every day to that ratio without running screaming into the Garden Route. Overall verdict: Fraaisig Primary is a beautiful name carrying a genuinely heavy load, but those 42 teachers deserve a Checkers Xtra Savings card, a long weekend, and a very large wine.
