Hoërskool Stella. Named after a star, located in... Stella, North West. Not Sandton. Not Cape Town. Not even Potchefstroom. Stella. A town so small that when the 285 learners all sneeze at the same time, the whole North West province says "gesondheid." With 20 educators for 285 kids, you've got a 14.3 to 1 ratio, which sounds fine until you realise in Stella there's probably one of those educators who teaches Afrikaans, Life Orientation, AND coaches the rugby team AND is also the principal AND fixes the photocopier on Fridays. Now here's where it gets interesting. This school charges fees. It is not a no-fee school. In Stella. They are out here collecting money in a town that Google Maps probably still hasn't fully loaded. And the description is beautiful, bru, just beautiful. "Follows the National Senior Certificate curriculum aligned to CAPS." Brother. Every school in South Africa follows CAPS. That's like saying "our tuck shop sells food." Congratulations, so does every other tuck shop in the country. But here's the thing. 100% matric pass rate. One hundred percent. Not 98, not 99 point something. A hundred. While big fancy schools in the Southern Suburbs are sweating, little Stella in the North West is just quietly cooking. You can laugh at the location all you want but those results are no joke. Overall verdict: Looks like nothing from the outside, hits like a ton of bricks on results day, basically the Stella of schools.
