Power Memorial Christian Academy. Broe, the name sounds like they training pastors for a megachurch in Texas, but you are sitting in Nwamitwa, Xihoko, Limpopo. The "Power" in the name is doing a lot of heavy lifting because Eskom definitely cut that power at least three times this week. "Memorial" is also a choice, because what exactly are we memorialising here? The 48 learners who showed up? 48 learners. FORTY EIGHT. That is not a school, that is a slightly large family reunion with a chalkboard. You have got 5 teachers for 48 kids, which sounds impressive until you realise the "Christian" part means one of those teachers is definitely also the pastor, the tuck shop supervisor, and the person who locks the gate. The ratio of 9.6 learners per educator sounds fancy on paper but bra, with 48 kids total you can hear everything that is happening in every classroom at the same time. There is no bunking. There is no hiding. God is watching AND so is the teacher next door through the wall. And this is a primary school, so these little ones are just getting started. They came into Power Memorial Christian Academy full of hope, not yet knowing that their entire grade is basically one WhatsApp group with a teacher added. Matric rage is a long way off, but the school braai probably has all 48 learners, all 5 teachers, and a single boerewors roll between them. Overall verdict: Tiny, faithful, and probably tight-knit in a way that actually matters, but the name is writing cheques the size cannot cash.
