Moremi Primary School in Polokwane, where the government decided that one teacher handling 32 kids is completely fine and nobody needs to question that. Thirty-two learners per educator. That is not a classroom, that is a taxi rank with a chalkboard. One teacher is basically doing the work of five people while the Department of Education sits somewhere in Pretoria eating lunch and feeling good about themselves. Seven educators for 228 kids. Seven. You could count the staff on your two hands and still have fingers left over to point at whoever made this decision. The poor teachers are not teaching, they are surviving. Every morning they walk in, see those rows of little faces, and somewhere deep inside something just quietly gives up. Jy weet hoe is dit. But listen, it is a no-fee school, which means the government is footing the bill, and we respect that because at least the kids can get through the gate without their parents refinancing a car. Polokwane is out here building the next generation of lawyers and doctors and engineers, and they are doing it with seven teachers and what we can only assume is a lot of prayer and very long school days. Overall verdict: Moremi is carrying serious weight with very little backup, which honestly makes the teachers there legends, but the Department of Education needs to sit down and have a hard conversation with itself.
