No fees sounds amazing until you realise the government is also the one funding it, and bru, the government can barely keep the lights on. Load shedding hits different when you are trying to write an essay by candlelight in a classroom built for thirty but holding thirty-six kids. Yes, thirty-six learners per teacher. That is not a class, that is a taxi. A teacher stands in front and thinks they are teaching but half the kids at the back cannot even hear them, they are just vibing and hoping the matric exam is multiple choice. 1699 learners. That is basically a small town inside a school. You do not go to Derek Kobe, you relocate there. Making friends is fine but finding your class after break is a whole expedition. You need Google Maps and a local guide just to get to the tuck shop and back before the bell rings. And then the pass rate. 76.1 percent. So roughly one in four kids did not make it through matric. That is not a statistic, that is a whole Grade 12 class that the system just shrugged at. Polokwane deserves better and so do those kids. The teachers are clearly working miracles at 36 to 1, honestly respect, but the department sitting in their offices needs to feel some heat. Overall verdict: Derek Kobe is a school held together by underpaid teachers and sheer Limpopo stubbornness, and somehow that is actually kind of admirable.
