Mmabulepu High School in Groothoek, Lebowakgomo, where 12 teachers are out here trying to manage 425 teenagers like they are herding cats with a broken stick. Thirty five learners per teacher. Thirty five. That is not a classroom, that is a taxi rank with a chalkboard. One teacher probably teaches Maths, Physical Science, Life Orientation, and doubles as the security guard on Fridays. Jy weet hoe is dit. Now listen, no-fee school means the government is footing the bill, which sounds great until you remember the government also gave us load shedding and potholes the size of a small municipality. Those 12 teachers are absolute warriors though, because getting 425 kids through high school in Limpopo on zero fees and maximum chaos is not a small thing. The tuck shop probably runs on vibes and ambition alone. But here is the thing that actually makes you respect it. An 83.3% matric pass rate. With a 35 to 1 ratio, no fees, and a name that most people in Cape Town would struggle to pronounce, those kids are passing matric while some fancy school in Constantia with a heated pool and a R50 000 annual fee is sitting at the same number. Mmabulepu said we do not need your resources, we just need to show up. Overall verdict: Understaffed, underfunded, and absolutely unbothered, because an 83% pass rate with 12 teachers is the most impressive thing happening in South African education right now.
