While schools in Constantia are charging parents a bond repayment every month for a swimming pool and a "holistic learning journey," Ezingcuka is out here in the Eastern Cape, free of charge, with one teacher looking after 28 kids at a time, and still nearly 9 out of 10 learners walk out with a matric certificate. Jy weet hoe is dit. Twenty-three educators for 654 learners. That is not a classroom, that is a taxi rank with a whiteboard. Every teacher there is basically doing the work of two people before lunch, probably marking books during load shedding with a candle and sheer determination. And still, 87.9%. No fancy science lab. No motivational posters in Comic Sans. Just teachers who actually pitch up and learners who came to work. Kentani is not Sandton. Nobody is pulling up in a Cayenne for the Grade 8 orientation. But this school is quietly doing something that a lot of expensive schools with glossy prospectuses and Latin mottos cannot do, and that is getting results with almost nothing in the budget. The Eastern Cape gets jokes thrown at it constantly, but Ezingcuka is out here making provinces with bigger budgets look a little embarrassed. Overall verdict: Scrappy, underfunded, and genuinely impressive, this is the school that does not talk about excellence, it just delivers it.
